The Former Eatonville Landfill: A Model for Collaborative Cleanups in Washington and Beyond

The Former Eatonville Landfill offers a compelling case study in how collaboration, early coordination, and an integrated project approach can accelerate complex environmental cleanup. The Nisqually Tribe and Washington Department of Ecology identified cleanup of the site as a priority to support watershed restoration and improve fish habitat.

Located within the developing Nisqually State Park and the Mashel River watershed, the site presented significant technical and logistical challenges—including steep, unstable slopes; approximately 61,000 tons of waste and impacted soil to be removed; a mid-slope spring; wetland and upland restoration; and installation of a soil nail wall.

Through close coordination among the Nisqually Tribe, Ecology, the Town of Eatonville, Weyerhaeuser Company, consultants, and contractors, the project moved from Remedial Investigation/Feasibility Study to construction completion on an accelerated timeline. The project team will share how early collaboration, integration of the contractor into design, and a focus on constructability helped overcome technical challenges, identify efficiencies, and expedite implementation.

This keynote will highlight lessons from the project’s full lifecycle and explore what this experience can teach practitioners about moving complex cleanup projects forward—faster, more collaboratively, and with successful outcomes for communities and the environment.
