The rapid growth of data centers, driven by artificial intelligence and cloud computing, is significantly impacting energy demand and land use. Data centers currently consume about 4% of U.S. electricity, and this demand is projected to rise dramatically by 2028. Northern Virginia, particularly Loudoun County, has emerged as a global hub for data centers, handling 70% of global internet traffic. However, the expansion of these facilities raises concerns about zoning conflicts, environmental impacts, and the use of valuable land for community-focused projects. A recent webinar highlighted the challenges local governments face in balancing these developments with community needs.
