What is GIS?

GIS stands for Geographic Information System and is a system used to capture, store, manipulate, analyze and present geographic data. GIS applications are tools used for mapping and analyzing datasets which allow the users to get creative and innovative. GIS is more than just software, it can be used for problem solving and decision making, as well as to help visualize data in a spatial environment.

GIS Day is an international opportunity for users to showcase how they use GIS technology and to learn about how others may use GIS. It is a great day for discovering, learning and exploring the benefits of GIS. The first formal GIS Day took place in 1999, orchestrated by ESRI’s president and co-founder Jack Dangermond.

We use GIS on a daily basis here at ERIS and wanted to share how it has helped us develop. We created an interactive Story Map for you to scroll through the different ways we use GIS for our products. (Story Map is a web application provided through ESRI)
